I am absolutely obsessed with finding sea glass. I call it that because it is not beach glass. As I did a bit of research for this post, I found out that sea glass is found on beaches that have salt water or the ocean and beach glass is found near fresh water lakes, rivers, etc. I was today years old when I found out.
Rocks and Glass
I have found my stash predominantly in Maine and Massachusetts. A little bit in New Hampshire because it has such a small coastline. Every beach when I have found pieces has one major thing in common: rocks. There has to be something for the glass to break on or be rolled against with the waves. I have not found one piece of sea glass on a beach that does not have rocks. That is just my personal experience.
I personally like pieces that are very frosted and that comes in different shapes. I especially like pieces that are the tops of bottles (as you can see above) or that have a different texture. Love to find pieces with words on them. The beach that I go to weekly in MA is a treasure trove of sea glass, especially abundant at low tide.
Low Tide
I found the pieces in the above pictures within the same week at the same beach. Low tide was at a perfect time and I left a lot of pieces behind. I have found so much sea glass this summer that I am becoming choosy as to what I keep and what I leave behind. It is a treasure hunt every time I visit this beach.
I was today years old when I found out that sea glass represents healing and renewal, which makes it each more special to me. I love when something I cherish has a meaning that jives with my soul. Isn’t everyone looking for renewal and healing from something each day? So glad I found out this information.
Sea glass is very pretty. I love how the ocean transforms glass.
As a little girl my grandmother took me to the beach and we would collect sea glass together. I had not thought of this until you showed these pictures. What a lovely memory for me, thank you!
That is such a good memory! I love the beach.
I really love sea glass as well. I think it’s so lovely and beautiful. I don’t collect it, but I should.
Yes, collecting is so fun.
I miss being close to the beach. Hunting for sea shells and sea glass is one of my favorite things to do at the beach. I live 5 or more hours from the beach.
Oh no! I love being near the beach. I don’t think I could live far away from the water.
I remember collecting sea glass as a child when we would go on holiday. It can be so pretty and can be made into jewellery which is such a lovely idea.
What a great memory!
I don’ t live close enough to the sea to look for sea glass, I do, however, have a rock collection.
Rocks can hold wonderful properties also.
I love finding weathered sea glass, too! Not so much fresh glass though, always a fear in the back of my mind!
The more weathered, the better.
It is always a treat to find sea glass on the beach! I didn’t realize that it was supposed to symbolize healing and renewal.
I just learned that too.
My daughter loves to collect the sea glass. It’s fun and sometimes we find really wonderful pieces!
It’s a treasure hunt every time.
Those are beautiful. I didn’t know too that sea glass represents those things. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome Lynndee.
What a fun hobby with a beautiful outcome! I’ve never collected it, but now I’ll keep an eye out.
Thanks Megan
How pretty. I have always liked sea glass. I wish I found more of it when I went to the beach.
How lovely!! I’m a bit of a shell collector, but have been thinking about adding some sea glass to my collection. Great tips!
I love shells and sand dollars too
I am such a fan of sea glass I have collected it for years and some great pieces of jewelry made out of my finds.
I wish I knew how to make jewelry with it because I have a few pieces that I LOVE.
That is interesting the difference between sea glass and beach glass. I was today years old as well!
I was searching about sea glass today and came across your website – a great collection of high-quality articles.
