Introduction to the Root Chakra Muladhara

Posted on September 23, 2017July 21, 2022 By Kim 48 Comments on Introduction to the Root Chakra Muladhara
Love, Yoga

Chakra is the Sanskrit word for circular wheels of energy, which are in and around our bodies. The 7 chakras line up in the center of our bodies. Chakras 8 through 12 are connected to the soul, the divine and the cosmos (www.energymuse.com).  I am starting with the root chakra muladhara and will then do a post for each of the chakras.

Root/Base/First Chakra

Sanskrit name: Muladhara

Association: physical and spiritual energy, grounding, safety & security, family loyalty, foundation

Imbalances: lack of energy, eating disorders, insecurity, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, lack of sex drive, foot and/or leg pain

Symbol: lotus with 4 petals; triangle in the center pointing down signifying grounding to the earth

Color: red

Element: Earth

Location: base of the spine near coccyx

Healing Stones to balance, heal and cleanse the root chakra (place on chakra area while meditating): garnet, red jasper, red calcite, smoky quartz, obsidian, hematite

Essential Oils to support root chakra: rosewood, rosemary, sandalwood, cedar, clove, ginger

Organs connected to root chakra: vertebral column, feet, blood, legs, teeth, skeleton

Strengthening Root Chakra:   walk barefoot on dirt, grass, sand; sit and rest your back on a tree; Yoga poses: Shavasana, Tadasana (mountain pose), Virabhadrasana 1 (warrior 1)

I am a big fan of the Journey Junkie and she has put out a yoga flow for each chakra that I will share with each post.

I spend a lot of time walking barefoot in the grass and dirt so it’s good to know I have been strengthing my muladhara! Are the essential oils placed on the root chakra like the healing stones are?

If you are feeling the imbalances of the root chakra, you can diffuse those essential oils or use them topically with a carrier oil:)

I never technically knew what a chakra was. I do feel that being outside in nature and praying helps calm my mind.

I’ve heard of the word “chakra” before, but I never really understood the meaning. I also didn’t realize how specific the aspects got. That’s pretty cool. It never occurred to me that walking barefoot or resting my back against a tree would strengthen my chakra!
