I have wanted start a yoga journey for quite awhile. I took some yoga classes years ago and never went back to it due to, now realizing in hindsight, I wasn’t quite ready for the full journey. It will be good for my body and soul, therefore, I have decided to dip my toe into the yoga pool. I cannot remember many of the poses so I feel that I am a beginning beginner.
One of the reasons that I haven’t been to a yoga class in forever is because I will feel embarrassment. What if EVERYONE in the class knows all the poses hence I am the only one who doesn’t know them? When I give it a second thought, however, I know that most yogis want to spread their love and knowledge of yoga so I shouldn’t be embarrassed. If any group can be understanding of a beginner, it would be this group.
When I look for local classes, I have seen some beginning beginner classes, but they don’t fit into my schedule. I want to start this journey NOW so I decided to do some research and take the first step. Much needed information and supplies are a click or stretch away. As a result of said research, I discovered some wonderful realities.
EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH THE FIRST STEP.
What do I need to start this wonderful journey?
Versatile clothes? Yes!
Informational books? Yes!
For the mind: True Yoga: Practicing with the Yoga Sutras for Happiness & Spiritual Fulfillment
For the body: Mindfulness Yoga
Especially relevant…helpful videos? Yes!
Okay…no more excuses and full speed ahead.
Finally, I would love to know any resources that you cannot live without in regards to yoga. Please tell me about any music you listen to, essential oils you use, videos you follow…I want to hear about all your yoga non-negotiables. A yoga journey update will be forthcoming. Namaste.
I have never tried Yoga yet. But I was just inspired by this post. Hmmm maybe I’ll check out with friends about this 🙂
Sounds like a plan…things are always easier when friends come along:)
I love this! I personally don’t practice yoga every day, but reading inspiration from other who do makes me feel that I can! I completely understand where you’re coming from with not wanting to go to classes–it can be so embarrassing!
It seems like everyone who does yoga LOVES it so I want to be part of that love:)
I’ve been doing yoga for 20 years and if it makes you feel any better — each and every time I go I can feel like a beginner – but you are right, nobody cares! Everyone is too focussed on how they feel in the moment and if I do notice someone new and a struggling a little it always makes me feel warm and fuzzy to know they are starting their yoga journey and it will be wonderful. I would highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/user/yogawithadriene/videos for some down to earth home instruction — she has videos for beginners through to advance. Enjoy – it’s an amazing thing to do!
Thank you so much…I will definitely look into those videos…have a great day!!
I love yoga! So refreshing and centering. This journey sounds amazing! 🙂

Thanks Miss J…looking forward to moving along my journey
I LOVE DOING YOGA! i was really into yoga earlier but then i tapered off after i got pregnant with baby #3. I love that you began your journey and honestly a little jealous of it! I want to get back into it so bad! A few things I couldn’t live without were the tools to help get into the position more – bolsters, straps, and blocks.. in the beginning of my practice i wanted to be so B.A. that I didn’t need them at all, but I was doing the poses wrong! using tools to help me, was beneficial in the long run and really help me put my ego in check.
I have some hip issues so I’ll probably definitely need the blocks…I already have a strap. Thanks for the great tips Justine:)
I used to take yoga clases, now everybody is telling me to go back after pregnancy, I wish I had time for it LOL
I know…so hard with little ones. My little one is 14 now:( so I have the time:) Love every moment of their childhood…it really is the blink of an eye.
Good for you taking the steps to get into it again! I really need to do the same. I took a beginning yoga series last year and really enjoyed it but I didn’t keep up with it and I miss it!
I need a beginner series too, but I want to do some online classes first:)
I love yoga! I have had some classes. I’m a super beginner. It’s all about just getting on the mat. Not knowing it all. Now I do yoga at home with myyogaworks.com. I’ve also done yogaglo.com. Love them both. They are both subscription services.
Thanks for the ideas for at home yoga Cathy.
Way to go girl! I don’t yoga well, but I love how I feel afterwards. I love the Tone It Up videos. They have some great yoga flows that are good for all levels. 🙂
Thanks Jessica…I’ll have to check those videos out.
I love this! You can totally get back into a yoga journey. I am excited to follow along with you. My journey has been so rewarding and so challenging at the same time. You got this!
Thanks Trish…I’m really excited about it and I’ve gotten great tips from my blog readers
I love yoga! It’s very soothing to your mind, body, and soul. Glad you decided to start your journey again. It’s a wonderful experience. I’m hoping one day, my life will slow down and I’ll have the opportunity to become a yoga teacher. Good Luck on your journey…Namaste’
Thanks Daria…I have heard and experienced nothing, but good things from yoga
I have been wanting to stick to yoga for a while now! I’m dying to go to some yoga classes too but I keep falling behind and slacking on keeping up with yoga! I love how peaceful and relaxing it is though, and I miss it!
I love hearing other beginner’s stories on yoga, etc., and I’m glad to hear that you’re starting a new journey with yoga! This also inspires me to pick back up on yoga!
And when I do yoga, I never thought to try any essential oils, but lately I’ve been hearing about them and how they’re supposed to be great for a lot of different things! So, I’ve been wanting to try them! But I listen to the yoga stations on Pandora! I really love those!
One of the studios I went to used EOs and I LOVED it. That studio has a gentle yoga stretch that I MUST try.
I would love to start yoga again. My life is too busy right now, I need to constantly remind myself to slow down.
I so agree…yoga is good for us and helps us to slow down and live in the moment, but we don’t have a moment to spare:)
I love that you are on this journey, and excited to see where the road leads you 🙂 You’re absolutely 100% correct–the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, right? You’re already on your way! I really love DoYouYoga and Yoga Download — they have some wonderful resources! Best of luck to you on this exciting journey!!
XOXO
Thanks Charlotte…I teach kindergarten and I’ve been having my class do yoga every day to start the day on a positive calm note:)

Thanks Stephanie…yoga is so good for the body and soul
I’m teaching a 6 week yoga 101 workshop starting next week. You would love it as a starting point for your yoga journey. One of the most amazing journeys you can take. Email me if you have any questions. I’m happy to chat yoga anytime.
A non-negotiable is an open mind and heart to the possibilities of yoga.
That sounds like it would be perfect for me:) Where are you located? Another reader told me about Yoga by Adriene on Youtube and I LOVE her. Thanks for the offer Jill…I may have some questions along my journey.
Thanks for sharing your yoga journey with us! I am so excited for you. I used to practice yoga quite regularly, and then it stopped being a regular practice in my life. I need to get back into it! I love yoga so much. Thanks for the inspiration. =)
It is so good for us Aarika…I know that I’m excited to continue the journey
