Okay….so you saw that title and said…”what the heck are hip woes??” Well, I’m a gunna tell ya. When I was little, like 3 years old, I had a major hip problem. I can’t remember what it was called, but I couldn’t walk and had to have physical therapy. I led a perfectly normal childhood after that, played sports, etc.
Fast forward to 2002 when I was pregnant with my son, I had AWFUL hip pain. It felt more like a pulled groin and figured it was due to the added weight of my son in my belly. After I had him, it got better. I then decided to do a kickboxing class and shortly after starting it, I was in a lot of pain. I couldn’t even raise my leg to do kicks. The orthopedist said it was the dreaded arthritis, which started all those years ago with that childhood hip ailment.
At the time of diagnosis, I started talking glucosamine and Motrin or Aleve for pain. The glucosamine really didn’t help, but the pain relievers did. I stretched a lot and tried not to overuse it and the pain came and went. I didn’t want to have to take pain relievers for the rest of my life because taking them daily is not good for you. For the most part, the pain was not bad and I continued to workout.
I started back with spin classes on Thanksgiving because my favorite instructor started at a new studio. I missed it so much and I started back up with a passion. The studio is awesome and it tells you your RPMs and energy as your pedaling. It’s a great way to gauge your workout. Well, the pain came back with a vengeance. So much so, that I could hardly walk. I didn’t want to give up my beloved spin classes.
This time I spoke to my chiropractor, the best chiropractor in the world by the way. He said, let’s try something and proceeded to do some deep tissue work that made my eyes water. He said come back next week and we’ll see how it is. Also, foam roll everyday. He also said that we may have to take an X-ray if it didn’t improve. My hip felt better almost immediately and I skipped through the week so excited to not have pain. I went to a spin class at another studio and PAIN, PAIN, PAIN. Sigh:( I foam rolled when I got home and it felt better.
The next day, PAIN again and I thought, I do not want to give up spin…please don’t make me do it. The following day it hurt a little less, the next day was my favorite spin class and I said, doggone it…I’m going. I didn’t go as hard, which killed me, but it felt good. The most pain I had that day was when I had been sitting for a long time and got up…I foam rolled again.
So that brings me to today, my next chiropractor appointment. Deep tissue work again…tears in my eyes again. He said it’s a muscle issue not an arthritis issue because I felt better after the deep tissue work. He also told me to take a magnesium supplement called CALM. I am going back in another week. He said just don’t go all out on spin and I should be okay, it will just take time for the muscle to heal. HALLELUJAH!!! I LOVE my chiropractor…if you don’t have one, you should look into it. I swear by him and he always knows exactly where my pain is and treats it immediately. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Pete!!!! (This is not a paid advertisement. It is just an overwhelmingly positive review of the services that I receive every time I go to my chiropractic office.)
Glad you got help
Thank you
So sorry you’ve had bad hip problems! I’ve had hip problems before and I know how painful it can be.
I got a new foam roller with the bumps on it and that has also helped…thanks
Yoga could really help you! It would be worth a try 🙂
Yes….I have that on my list of must-dos
So sorry to hear about your hip problems but good that you have found a good doc/chiropractor. I heard foam rollers help a great deal, hope you recover fully soon.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my chiropractor <3
This is great and helpful info. I also struggle with knee and back pain. Stretching and yoga are a good help for me. Thanks for this info.
I just got a foam roller with the bumps on it and it is awesome…give it a try!!!
This actually made me cry (happiness) . I have had this exact same situation in my office (I am a chiropractor) and I also recommended CALM and did the deep tissue work that made people get up off the table thinking a miracle happened. CHIROPRACTIC is phenomenal. Find the right one and stick with them, regularly. Thank you so much for sharing this!
OMG…my chiropractor also recommended CALM!!!! Brilliant minds think alike…I’ve had little to no pain this whole week:)
My dad has been on the fence of looking for a chiropractor but after this post we will definitely be looking for one. Congrats on your progress.
Thanks Jennifer…find a good chiropractor and it will literally change your life. He also got rid of my acid reflux about 5-6 years ago. When I’m sick, I always go to him first. So awesome!!
I know how you feel! I’ve got horrible arthritis in most of my joints (I’ve had it all my life and it just gets worse and worse) and it really does put a damper on what you can do. I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t arthritis after all and that you could get some help for it! Rock on! 🙂
Try chiropractic…really…it could help. My chiropractor is so knowledgeable in all areas…I love him.
For years I thought my back was bad.. nope its my hip!! The pain is horrible but thanks to my amazing chiropractor, my hips are aligned and I walk without a limp!!
Chiropractors rock!!!!!
I am so glad you are finding relief from the chiropractor. Living with chronic pain is so hard, especially when you are a mom and someone is relying on you!
Just went to see him yesterday and he could tell from the deep tissue work he did that it was better…love him
